2016 IRS Standard Mileage Rates

10 Jan 2016 IRS Standard Mileage Rates

Beginning January 1, 2016, the standard mileage rates for the use of cars, vans, pickups or panel trucks is:

54 cents per mile (2015 was 57.5 cents per mile) for business miles driven.
19 cents per mile for medical or moving miles (2015 was 23 cents).
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations.

Taxpayers always has the option of using actual expenses rather than using standard mileage rates.  However, a taxpayer may not use the standard mileage rate for any vehicle that has been depreciated or for more than any four vehicles used simultaneously.

Whether you use standard mileage or actual costs, you should keep a written record for each vehicle of total miles, commuting miles, personal miles, and each type of miles that can use the standard mileage rate.
